What is Red Light therapy?

The average American spends over 90% of their time indoors, which means most people don’t get as much natural light as they need for optimal health. Red light therapy, also called “photobiomodulation”, supplements the light we need from our environment by delivering concentrated wavelengths of LED red and near infrared light to our skin and cells, without the dangerous UV rays or excess heat.

How JOOVV®️ works

The stimulation of light energy works similar to photosynthesis in plants. As the light is absorbed into the body’s cells, it interacts with light-sensitive components in the mitochondria, called cytochromes. The process promotes the body’s natural ability to heal by encouraging cells to produce more ATP energy, or adenosine triphosphate – the energy that fuels everything we do.

Red Light Usage

NASA began using red light therapy for wound healing after finding that it activated natural plant growth in space. Since then, the FDA has approved it as a therapy for treating minor pains and arthritis and there has been extensive clinical research on its various applications.

Most notably, red light therapy has been shown to boost immune function, sleep, circulation, reduce inflammation and pain, promote faster healing and muscle recovery, skin rejuvenation, collagen production, hormone balancing, thyroid regulation, weight loss and cognitive function.

Health Benefits

Immune boost

Immune cells are strongly affected by red light therapy. Mast cells in particular, degranulated in response to red-spectrum wavelengths. As a result, the pro-inflammatory cytokines TNF-a gets released from cells and leukocytes, which are white blood cells, are better able to infiltrate the body’s tissue to promote increased immune efficiency and function.

Training and Muscle Recovery

Elite trainers and athletes are using Joovv for muscle growth and recovery benefits. NFL stars like Patrick Peterson and elite fighters like UFC champion TJ Dillashaw swear by Joovv for recovery after demanding workouts. Numerous trials and studies have found that light therapy helps your body produce more cellular energy and reduces oxidative stress, which helps tired & damaged muscle tissue repair and regenerate faster.

Recent 2016 research published in the American Journal of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation shows that the application of light therapy also promotes the growth of healthy muscle tissue, naturally increasing muscle size and bulk—as well as strength.

Ben Greenfield, voted America’s top personal trainer, also swears by Joovv for muscle health and recovery, in addition to sex drive and testosterone. He wrote a major guide and answered FAQs to red light therapy in late 2018 with a ton of good information, as well as his personal experience with Joovv.

Melatonin and Sleep

Most people are exposed to a lot of unhealthy artificial light that disrupts your circadian rhythm and makes it harder to sleep. Red and near infrared does the exact opposite and helps protect your internal clock. Clinical studies show light therapy also increases natural melatonin production for healthier sleep. Bulletproof founder Dave Asprey swears by red light therapy for healthy sleep, and even devoted a chapter of his book on sleep, Game Changers, to using Joovv for a better circadian rhythm instead of unhealthy blue light.

Alzheimers and Dementia

Two of the first trials on dementia and red light therapy came out in 2017, with extremely positive findings. Across trials, the data showed significant improvements in executive function, recall, memory, visual attention, and task switching. Patients also experienced better sleep and mental health when receiving red light therapy treatments. Researchers documented significantly fewer angry outbursts, and less anxiety.

Pain relief

Red light therapy is a proven, natural pain reliever that reduces inflammation. Joovv’s light therapy products are registered with FDA as class II medical devices for the treatment of pain, strain, and inflammation.

Skin, Collagen, and Anti-Aging

Red light therapy feels so rejuvenating because it stimulates the production of collagen, which gives skin its elasticity, hair its strength, and connective tissue its ability to hold everything together. Numerous studies and trials have found light therapy improves skin tone & complexion, diminishes signs of aging, and speeds the healing of wounds and scars.

Inflammation

One of the primary responses to red light therapy is a pronounced reduction in inflammation and oxidative stress, with significantly lowered joint pain. Dr. Sarah Ballantyne, aka Paleo Mom, suffered from chronic pain for years from fibromyalgia, but says she hasn’t been symptomatic since she started using Joovv red light therapy last year.

Hormone regulation

Emerging research on red light therapy is showing positive results for hormone balance, like improving thyroid health, testosterone production, and overall sex hormone levels.

Initial results from a trial on red light therapy and the ketogenic diet have shown impressive testosterone gains for men and gains in sex hormones for women, like progesterone, estradiol and DHEA. Initial research has shown that a red light therapy routine can improve thyroid conditions like hypothyroidism and thyroiditis, in some cases helping patients reduce or eliminate their need for levothyroxine. Brain Function

When a light therapy device is shined on a person’s head, wavelengths of near infrared (NIR) light can penetrate deep into the body and be absorbed by the brain. The brain benefits from increased cerebral blood flow, more oxygen availability & consumption, and a boost of ATP energy production through enhanced mitochondrial activity.

Learning and memory experts like Jim Kwik use red and near infrared light therapy to improve brain function. Research on red light therapy and brain health is showing how natural light can improve reaction time, attention, executive function, and memory. Red light therapy also shows potential for healing damaged brain tissue. In the first human trials, red light therapy has demonstrated major improvements in people with brain injuries like TBI and CTE.
